ART, TECHNOLOGY, AND VISUALS
ARTHI: Digital Art Europe Now
Jiarong Song
This is a blog on the topic of Art, Technology, and Visuals. Because I mainly study visual communication design, I often focus more on the visual elements of an art piece. I investigated a few digital artists and I found there are some artists who work with codes that really fit my topic. They create generative arts and algorithmic drawings. They work in a digital format with software that fits the word "technology", and their works are more visually compelling which fits the word "visual". This is where my topic title comes from.
After the first presentation, I decided to further explore these artist's understanding of the visual element within their works and how they use these elements to build the connection between art and technology.
Casey Reas
Casey Reas is one of the leading artists creating software-based, generative artworks nowadays. He is also the co-creator, with Ben Fry, of the programming language Processing (2001) and has authored many books on creative coding. As a Visual communication design student, I'm attracted by this kind of two-dimensional, irregular shapes and graphics created by programming languages.
Process Compendium (Introduction)Â | Casey Reas
"This presentation of the Process series of work was created for the Serpentine Museum's Map Marathon event October 16-17 2010 at the Royal Geographical Society in London. It illustrates the Forms, Behaviors, and Elements that are the foundation of a series generative software, installations, prints, and objects."
How To Draw With Code | Casey Reas
In this interview, Casey Reas introduces how he use codes to express his thoughts, and how to compose every elements with them. It also shows how his programming language Processing is closing the gap between software and visual objects.
Peter Beyls
Peter Beyls's work is focused on generative systems, with which he produces algorithmic drawings. These are some examples of his plotter drawings.
AxiDraw V3Â | Pen Plotter
The AxiDraw is an easy-to-use pen plotter machine, designed to serve a wide variety of everyday and specialized drawing and writing needs. In my opinion, it is more close to artificial intelligence topic rather than visuals because according to this video, it seems like the machines's original use is perfect writing. But Peter Beyls's work really impressed me, he is definitely creating arts using the machine instead of improving life quality.
